2000
Technologies of the year - ASP, Napster. The dot com "bubble" became the dot com "bomb". Reality bites back.

2001
Broadband gaining popularity.
72% of Americans use the Internet. Half of Europeans now online.
Number of active Internet subscribers rose by 11.5% during the year. English losing its dominance on the web. 43% native English speakers, 32% native speakers of European languages and 24.7% Asian languages.

2002
Over 600 million Internet users world-wide. Over 111 million new Internet users this year. US consumers spend $2.2 billion on online purchases in a single week in December. Online sales double in the UK this year.

In the late 1990's, venture capitalists were pouring money into the market with new start-ups promising to transform the business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) marketplaces.

The massive inflow of capital led to irrational expenditure on poorly constructed business plans. An over-investment in bandwidth, particularly fibre-optic cabling, and in the new 3rd Generation (3G) mobile networks, led to a crisis in the telecommunications industry with sharply reduced valuations and the spectacular collapse of Global Crossing.

After the dot com bubble burst in 2000, contrary to popular perception, the Internet continued to expand rapidly. The penetration of broadband has started and is enriching the Internet experience for many people.

It is still only the beginning.

B2C and B2B business plans are now better constructed. The emphasis for B2C is marketing and customer relationships. The emphasis for B2B is to harness low cost communications and the business integration opportunities of Intranets and Extranets.

And yes, the cost of bandwidth will continue to plummet. But, we may need to wait another year before Tablet PCs and 3G networks become significant.

Heres to the next 10 Internet years!

Freedom Now: Colonial Rule Is Overthrown in India and Africa

Freedom Now: Colonial Rule Is Overthrown in India and Africa
"When the dawn came [on the day of India's independence], I cannot describe to you how heady that feeling was. It was as though everything was new, the world was new....You felt you could do anything, now that we were free." - Birenda Kaur, India. At the beginning of the century, much of the world's population lived under colonial rule. Britain, Belgium, France, Portugal, all boasted holdings abroad. But in 1947, 160 years of British rule would come to an end as India assumed the mantle of the world's largest democracy, inspiring the fight for freedom on another continent across the globe.

Freedom Now talks to the people who witnessed and participated in the struggle for independence in India and Africa. While Mohandas Gandhi showed the world how the masses could successfully defy their imperial masters, his example spurred others on: European empires in Africa and Asia began to crumble, and in short order, Ghana, Kenya, Algeria, Mozambique, and dozens more would win their freedom.

The people remember: colonial rule, Mohandas Gandhi, Indian independence, Ghana, Kenya, Mau Mau uprisings, government corruption, a new oppression, Algeria, Mozambique.

Brocade Silk Long Scarf Rectangular Womens Accessory (nssb032)

Brocade Silk Long Scarf Rectangular Womens Accessory (nssb032)
Brocade silk rectangular Long scarfs are generally worn by Indian women on formal occasions. It has some extra shine coming from the metallic thread used in the fabric. The metallic thread provides some stiffness to the fabric and so many women also use these scarves as table runners.

Indian brocade rectangular silk scarf is often long and narrow, usually worn on or near the head, for warmth, fashion, cleanliness, or religious purposes. In dry, dusty climates, or in environments where there is a lot of airborne contaminants, a thin scarf is often worn over the head to keep the hair clean. Over time, this custom has evolved into a fashionable item in many cultures, particularly among women. Scarves in India have a significant place and traditional value. They are significant because they are considered a protector of women's integrity. Women's outfit in India is considered incomplete without a long scarf. The fabric of a scarf can be cotton, chiffon, georgette, silk, net or sometimes mixed too. These are integral parts of the salwar kurta, lehenga, and churidar. With cultural exposure from Europe, these scarves found their way to the western wardrobes too.

Indian Real Estate: Reaching for the Sky

Chandigarh Real Estate: A City Infiltrated by the Rich

A Times News Network reports Chandigarh is slowly and steadily becoming a city that caters to the well-heeled, wealthy crowd with oodles of money to spend. The reason for that assumption lies in the fact that this Monday, the Municipal Corporation sold a plot of land for Rs. 4,956.50 per sq. ft. in nearby Manimajra for a multi-storey housing scheme. The above rate is more than double the current market rate of Rs. 2,222.20 per sq. for a sq. ft. in a kanal plot in the city. And, compare it to the asking price of Rs. 2,200 per sq. ft. for flats being sold by the Government owned Chandigarh Housing Board in Sector 49.

A successful bid of Rs. 108-01-crores for 5.4-acres of freehold Manimajra land, Uppal Housing, a Delhi based firm plans to construct a 228-apartment housing project, which they will undoubtedly sell for at a profit. Assuming the company sells each of it flats for Rs. 2-crores, the land and building cost of each flat would come to Rs. 20,000 per sq. ft. Real estate sources in the city affirm this to be the highest rate ever, as even a one-kanal plot and house in the city cost approximately around Rs. 6,666.60 per sq. ft. At such exorbitant rates, the question remains who could afford to buy a flat in the complex. But, the Uppal Housing Company is confident they will be able to find buyers from amongst the dollar-rich NRI crowd for their upscale, upmarket apartment complex.

Further, the company surmises with the upcoming Rajeev Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park focusing business attention on the city, Chandigarh is fast becoming the next big destination for IT and ITes with money to invest in the IT Park and the city. These companies will require housing for their top brass, and since Manimajra is nearer the IT Park than other parts of the city, the Uppal Housing Company will be able to provide them with the best housing in the city.

The builders are also optimistic about offering high-end guest accommodation and leased accommodation for corporate and IT companies coming to the city. If the plan materialises as visualised, then Chandigarh is going to become the city "by the rich, for the rich and of the rich!"

Indian Real Estate: Tier-III Cities Set For Rapid Growth

Indian Real Estate: Inner Cities Attract High-Powered Investment

Over the next three to five years, India's Tier III cities are likely to be transformed, poised as they are to emerge as one of the most preferred investment destinations for global realty and investment firms. A few years down the road, and these locations that include Jaipur, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad and Lucknow will be unrecognizable in their new Avatars.

Realty sector surveys predict the availability of a requisite talent pool, coupled with low cost real estate will see a growing interest in Tier III cities, with the technology sector seeking to expand operations in these previously untapped locales.
Based on current and expected growth potential, various locations through the country are being classified as mature destinations, destinations that are in transition and those that are emerging.

Metros like Mumbai and Delhi are classified under the mature destination section. Metropolitan in character, so far, Mumbai and Delhi have been traditional business destinations, with a favourable track record in attracting investments. However, factors such as, an increase in operating costs, real estate supply constraints and socio-political risks are beginning to pose potential impediments in sustaining a high growth rate. Commercial real estate growth in Mumbai and Delhi is expected to be range-bound and focused mainly around the suburbs and peripheral areas in the coming years.

On the other hand, Bangalore and Gurgaon can be classified as destinations in transition, offering as they do a large captive human resource potential, availability of quality real estate and operating cost advantages. These then are locations best positioned to attract investments in the coming years. However, it is infrastructure bottlenecks that are the main hurdles in their growth path.

In the emerging real estate destinations, we have Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata, whose growth can be attributed to cost-advantages, well-developed infrastructure, limited real estate supply constraints and city governance. As well, growth here is led by expansion and consolidation of corporates belonging to the IT and ITeS sectors. Though, the number of occupants in these locations is yet, to reach optimum point, these locations continue to feature on real estate investment maps.

As in the economic, commercial and political field, India is undergoing a transformation in real estate, as well! As financial benefits and investments percolate downwards to small towns, cities, mofussils and villages, the dream of planned housing, paved streets, potable drinking water may, no longer remain a distant dream. Real estate builders and developers, while changing the face of Indian real estate, must not forget to keep true to the Indian ethos, while providing town planning in haphazardly built inner cities and towns of India!

Casual Dress Men Cotton Clothing Embroidered Kurta Pajama Long Sleeve Size X-L(gkp468)

Casual Dress Men Cotton Clothing Embroidered Kurta Pajama Long Sleeve Size X-L(gkp468)
Men Casual Dress kurta pajama is a gift to the Indian traditional wear by the great Mughals. In their custom, both men and women enjoyed kurtas and pajamas cut in long flowing panels. These elaborately embroidered kurtas with real gold and silver threads, weighed between 5 to 10 kilograms. With the change in time and fashion, modifications were made according to the comfort and affordability of people. Now the kurta pajama is more of a mans informal relaxing wear. Though the source of inspiration remains the same old Mughal fashion, many new changes are seen in todays style of Kurta pajamas.

Among men, the most commonly worn kurtas are the coarse handloom kurta with high Chinese collar. They are either plain woven or the designs are woven in different colors. Comfort and easy wearing quality has made the kurta pajama universally popular. They are worn in winters as well as summers. The material for the summer and winter kurta changes suiting the weather conditions. Summer welcomes crisp and light cottons, while winter gives way to all heavy and thick materials. However, the handloom kurtas are worn in both summer and winter. The style popular among mens kurtas is the straight cut with side pockets.

The prints commonly seen on this apparel in summers are block print and tie and dye of Rajasthan and Gujarat. These kurta pajama sets from Rajasthan and Gujarat come in not only traditional block printing and tie and dye but also with rich embroidery and glittering mirror work. The chikan hand embroidery of Lucknow is also very popular for its traditional rich look and values. These are usually made in pure cotton as they are worn mainly in summer. The winter Kurtas are in silk, satin, and other thick fabric.

The Indianapolis Zoos newest exhibit showcases the enchanting underwater world of Pipefish, Seadragons, and Seahorses in the Waters Building. Looking in the tank we strained to spot one of these colorful creatures. But wait whats this

Masters of disguise.
The unusual creature wed mistaken for a leafy piece of seaweed is actually a Seadragon. This strange creature uses its natural ability to disguise to hide from predators. The Seadragon lives in the cold waters off the coast of Australia and New Zealand, and like its relatives the Pipefish and Seahorses it is a master of disguise. These amazing fish have gills to breathe underwater and can range in size from 1/8 of an inch to seven inches in length. Another unique characteristic of Seahorses is their pouch, similar to a Kangaroos, where their young are kept safe.

The Indianapolis Zoos Dolphins show will return to a new facility in May 2005. The Dolphin Pavilion offers visitors a one-of-a-kind experience in the 12 foot high, underwater dome centered in the dolphin performance pool. A coastal village wharf and special in-water dolphin program give visitors an opportunity to be up close to these amazing marine mammals. With the expansion of the Dolphin Pavilion and programs held throughout the year at the Indianapolis Zoo continues to promote education and awareness.

After watching the playful penguins, seals and polar bears romp around we headed over to the Caf on the Commons for a cup of hot chocolate. In the warmer season the Enchanted Mill childrens Play Area across from the Commons becomes a cool retreat from the summer heat. Children love the water features and special activities designed especially for them. The playground located in front of the Caf on the Commons is also accessible for children with disabilities. In addition to shows in the Amphitheatre and pony rides the Indianapolis Zoo has other exciting avenues of entertainment to enjoy. Hop on the White River Junction Express Train, take a trip on the 4-D African Safari Simulator, or try the thrilling Kombo Family Coaster.

In the Deserts Biome we learned about a snakes unique sense of smell. Different galleries like What a Snake Does explore the myths and life of these unique creatures.
Strolling through the Plains area we spotted the baby Baboons whod rather play than be groomed by their mother. Giraffes ate a leisurely meal and the tiger kept a close eye on a squirrel. It didnt take long before the squirrel realized his mistake and make a leap for high ground when the tiger started to climb the tree. Spontaneous moments like these make visiting the zoo exciting because you never know what to expect next.

Everywhere we looked we caught a glimpse of preparations for one of our favorite events of the holiday season; the Kroger Christmas at the Zoo. Each evening throughout December beginning at 5pm a million twinkling lights transform the zoo into a magical winter wonderland filled with over 150 larger-than-life light sculptures. Inside the Kroger Party Pavilion Santa and Mrs. Claus are on hand to greet children and take photos when children are finished having a ball in the bounce house. These are just a sampling of the exhibits and activities available year around at the Indianapolis Zoo.

Shantaram: A Novel

Shantaram: A Novel
"It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured."So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear.Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter Bombay's hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere. As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas---this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart. Based on the life of the author, it is by any measure the debut of an extraordinary voice in literature.

The mats made with kora grass are true collector items. Kora grass grows abundantly along the banks of the rivers in Tamil Nadu in South India. The process of creating a mat is quite complex. The green grass normally grows to a height of 3-4 feet and cut finely while it is still green. The inside white pith of the stem is removed with a sharp edged knife while the outer part is used for weaving. The count of the mat depend on how many strips the grass is cut into; the greater the number of strips, the higher the count. The strips are then dried in the sun. When the dried strips turn a yellowish green color, they are boiled in water and dried again. The dried grass is made up into bundles and then soaked in running water. These bundles are weighed down with stones at both ends they are then made to float in running streams of clean water. It is normally kept under water for three days, ensuring a very fine count. This wetting causes the grass to swell up to three times its original size. It is then dried in the sun again. The weaving is done on a floor loom. The process is slow and follows a basket weave pattern. The weft (or the grass) covers the warp entirely and the pattern formed has an interesting striped effect of its own. Once the weavings is complete, the mat is dried in the sun for a short while. It is then finished with a polishing stone. Customer who bought ShalinCraft Mat gave us this feedback (September 2 2006 They are beautiful. Each mat is a bit unique. Six arrived. I would definitely order from Shalin again). Paneer (227 Gram) by igourmet.com

Paneer (227 Gram) by igourmet.com
Paneer is a traditional full fat soft cheese used in Indian cooking. The cow is sacred to the Hindus, so paneer is a quick ripening cheese which is coagulated by the action of acid in milk and not by using rennet. This vegetarian cheese is pressed until the texture is firm, similar to tofu. A great source of protein, paneer makes an excellent meat substitute. As a result, paneer is essential to 80% of Indias diet and is in many of their recipes. The cheese maintains it's body in cooking and takes on the flavors it is cooked with. Paneer can be used in a wide variety of sweet and savory dishes. Made in England by Long Clawson Dairy.

Der Tiger von Eschnapur

Der Tiger von Eschnapur
Long dismissed as the last gasp of a great directing career, Fritz Lang's two-part saga of India needs to be rescued from the movie dustbin. While it has clear limitations, notably the listless actors and shoddy special effects (hard to overlook the fake tiger), this opus is marked by an awesome sense of formal design, immaculate camera composition, and the creeping sense of fate messing up the characters' lives. In part one, The Tiger of Eschnapur, we delve into the political and personal intrigue that results from a Maharaja's infatuation with a temple dancer (sawed-off, sexy Debra Paget). Lang's pacing is deliberate; sometimes the movie resembles an Indiana Jones yarn slowed to a stroll. But as Lang brings the many threads together, the scheme emerges, and the crisp location shooting in India presents a storybook exoticism that, admittedly, has little to do with reality. It ends with a cliffhanger, solved by part two, The Indian Tomb. --Robert Horton

Kundun: Music From The Original Soundtrack

Kundun: Music From The Original Soundtrack
For the second of 1997's dueling Buddhist epics (the other being Seven Days in Tibet, scored by John Williams), director Martin Scorsese made a wise--if commercially challenging--choice in tapping noted minimalist composer Philip Glass to score Kundun. Glass (who's previously scored the avant garde documentary Koyaanisqatsi trilogy, Mishima, and the strange Candyman horror series), is the perfect choice here; his own Buddhist beliefs play a key role in meshing image and music. Glass's familiar compositional techniques are wedded on Kundun to a sensitive use of ethnic instruments and the voices of the Gyuto Monks, adding an aura of spiritual power missing from most Hollywood fare. --Jerry McCulley

Outsourcing To India - Telesales

Introduction

When the so-called outsourcing revolution began some ten years ago, nations like India were prime targets for companies and other enterprises that were attempting to reduce the costs of certain functions that previously were undertaken in house. In this regard, a significant number of business enterprises and other organizations turned to India-based enterprises as outsourcing providers.

A common example of the type of outsourcing that was being undertaken within the nation of India was customer service and technical support. Many business enterprises turned to Indian providers because of the fact that employees in India are paid far less than what employees are paid in North American and most European nations. Thus, businesses were able to save a great deal of money by outsourcing different functions that once were undertaken in house and at a significantly greater cost.

Status of Outsourcing to India

The movement towards and pace of outsourcing to India has slowed in recent years. Indeed, some companies that have outsourced to India have commenced recalling some of the functions that had been outsourced to India either back in house or to contract providers in other parts of the world.

There are a number of reasons that some businesses have started to move away from outsourcing to India in recent years. (One does need to keep in mind that India was the primary spot where a great deal of outsourcing functions were being undertaken as the outsourcing trend really became a more steady flow in the 1990s and the early part of the 21st century.

Some businesses have expressed concerns about the quality of services that they have been receiving from outsourcing providers in the 21st century. This particularly has been the case when it comes to outsourced customer service and technical support functions. Despite the added costs that many times are experienced when these functions are maintained in house, some companies actually have pulled these functions in house regardless of the expense to make sure that the highest quality standards when it comes to customer service and support is maintained.

The net effect of movement out of India and the slowing down out outsourcing projects to that country is that India is becoming less of an outsourcing industry leader at this point in time. A number of other nations are hot on the heals of India when it comes to outsourcing efforts.

Other Alternatives

As suggested a moment ago, there are now alternatives to outsourcing to India. These outsourcing alternatives include:

In North America and throughout Europe, there are now companies that have been set up with the intent of trying to compete with some of the inexpensive operations that are operating in India. While these businesses cannot compete with India when it comes to the wages paid to employees, North American and European entities that are attempting to compete in the outsourcing marketplace are employing a broader range of technological advances that allows certain outsourced functions to be undertaken in a far more cost effective manner.

When looking to Europe for outsourcing, some of the nations in the eastern part of the continent have been particularly successful in meeting India head on. In some nations -- Romania, for example -- wages are lower than in other parts of Europe and North America. As a consequence, there are enterprises in these nations that have been able to compete fairly strongly with their Indian counterparts.

The Future

Businesses and other organizations will continue to use outsourcing services into the future. In this regard, there will be a wider range of outsourcing alternatives available to businesses and other organizations in the future.

More businesses and other organizations will consider domestic outsourcing enterprises when they are in needed of outsourcing services. In addition, those companies and other entities that chose to outsource internationally will be considering countries above and beyond India. While India will still obtain a significant share of outsourced business into the foreseeable future, other countries will continue to take an ever increasing share of the outsourcing market during the coming decade.

Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded: August 27, 1883 (P.S.)

Simon Winchester, New York Times bestselling author of The Professor and the Madman, examines the legendary annihilation in 1883 of the volcano-island of Krakatoa, which was followed by an immense tsunami that killed nearly forty thousand people. The effects of the immense waves were felt as far away as France. Barometers in Bogotá and Washington, D.C., went haywire. Bodies were washed up in Zanzibar. The sound of the island's destruction was heard in Australia and India and on islands thousands of miles away. Most significant of all -- in view of today's new political climate -- the eruption helped to trigger in Java a wave of murderous anti-Western militancy among fundamentalist Muslims, one of the first outbreaks of Islamic-inspired killings anywhere. Krakatoa gives us an entirely new perspective on this fascinating and iconic event.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

It is also one of those rare dresses that fit in well equally for business and for casual wear. Each Shalwar Kameez comes with a long rectangular scarf that is meant to be draped from shoulders down. For those not so familiar with Indian dresses, Salwar is the bottom part of the dresss, in the form of trousers. There is a drawstring for tying at the waist level. Kameez, also known as kurta is the upper part of the dress, is in the form of a long shirt. Preferred length for kameez by most women is knee- length. Sleeves come in variable sizes sleeveless, short sleeve, half sleeve, three quarter sleeve, and full sleeve. The fabric is usually light weight, which is what makes this dress extremely comfortable. Breath of the Heart

Breath of the Heart
Perhaps not as pretty as previous studio releases, Krishna Das's Breath of the Heart nevertheless captures the ecstasy, devotion, and life-affirming qualities of chant. Ably abetted by rap and rock producer Rick Rubin, Das joins with a choir dubbed the Kosmic Kirtan Posse, featuring the East and West Coast Posses, a group of some 50 members including Mike D of the Beastie Boys, while instruments as diverse as harmonium, Hammond B3 organ, violin, guitar, cymbals, and drums play backdrop.

Das and friends, through their gorgeously imperfect music, manage at once to exalt the divine and spotlight the inevitable suffering of the human condition. The core of Breath of the Heart--the lengthy "Kainchi Hare Krishna" and "Ma Durga"--successfully marry the sacred and profane, the temporal and the fixed. --Paige La Grone

Rajasthan has a rich and long tradition of leather crafts. Each village had its families of leather workers. The juti, mojari or pagarkhi are leather shoes and slippers worn by both men and women of all communities. The mojari is tanned with vegetable dye and has excellent thermal insulation quality. The process of production starts with cutting the leather with a sharp knife both for the upper and the sole. Stuck together with home made glue, they are stitched with cotton or leather thread. The upper is then embroidered by the women whose finesse as they embroider these shoes is a treat to watch. The embroidery is done directly on leather using cotton, silk or wool threads depending on the material used for the upper surface. Bright colors, traditional motifs and contemporary designs are the primary themes. The stitching is finally strengthened by hammering. Beads and appliqué works are also becoming very popular. Actual gemstones are no longer used as they were used once.
